I did not, and I was in the same situation. They are wonderful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], friendly people who will welcome you. It helps if you know the language,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as it is very confusing to see street signs in cyrillic. The only time they tried to take advantage of me was when I would speak English and try to buy something and they would think that I could not count change. I would then expalin very nicely in Ukarinian the correct change that I should receive and once they heard that language,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that changed the whole stiuation and then they want to talk to you and invite you for dinner!!Have fun. It helped me having a friend over there who did all the talking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], negotiating and paying. I did not, and I was in the same situation. I did not want to be treated any differently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and was really quite 'chuffed' when people asked me for directions and time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and tried to talk to me on the trams - only time someone realised I was a foreigner was on my last day when I packed my recently bought fur hat (a crime to be seen wearing fur in the UK!) and was hatless - on a tram I was found out - a daft foreigner freezing to death.

: The Ukrainians are friendly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],warm hearted and hospitable and will be pleased if you make even a lousy effort at speaking a few words - the basics will do - they seemed very touched to know that I had made such an effort to trace my relatives and my roots and made sure that I experienced as many Ukrainian customs and traditions as possible - prepare to return home half a stone heavier and your suitcase full of gifts given with great love!
: Any customs I continue back home - yes I make everyone who enters this house take off their shoes - they hate it and think I am cuckoo but it seems a sensible way of keeping the carpets clean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
: I also,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if washing any dishes by hand in the sink,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do so under running water (Ukrainian friends pointed out to me the unhygienic matter of filling the sink/bowl and leaving dishes soaking in their own dirt!!)
