Two new coaches try to fill some legendary shoes
For those of us tightly tied to high school sports, the Minnesota offseason is eight weeks long. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], between the final out of the state baseball tournament on June 15 and Monday's start of practice for fall sports, here is what I did on my summer vacation:
Cleaned my desk . spent a week in Palo Alto, Calif., and a couple weekends in Palo Alto County,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Iowa . read a book about the Thunderbolt Kid . went to a funeral after a lifelong friend died . continued my losing streak against crabgrass . saw movies starring Homer Simpson and Jane Austen.
But as the gears begin turning on another year of prep sports, the trips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], books, movies and lawn chores are happily set aside. Monday was day one of the 2007-08 calendar; or for two first-year head coaches who are stepping into big shoes, Day One.
Bob Majeski has retired as the football coach at Hastings and Walt Weaver has retired as the volleyball coach at Apple Valley. They coached for a combined 53 years.
In 22 years, Majeski had a career record of 175-69. His teams won a Class 5A state title in 2001 and were state runners-up in 1999 and 2003. Weaver, who finished a 31-year run with a record of 656-196-1, won big-school state championships in 1985 and 1992 and finished second in 1997.
Big shoes? They're absolutely Bunyanesque.
The shoe-fillers are Dana Strain at Hastings and Dan Seppala at Apple Valley. Other than their job titles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they have little in common. Strain is a Hastings newcomer; Seppala couldn't be more tied to Apple Valley.
Watching each team during its first practice Monday, the differences were evident. On the football field at Hastings, the Raiders have a new coaching staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new offense, a new defense and new terminology. Beyond the green grass and blue sky, nothing is familiar.
When an assistant coach barked, "Right twin 30 trap," you knew the kids were flipping through the playbook in their heads.
"We have all new plays," said senior captain Bob Speedling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who, befitting his name, is a running back. "The new coach definitely doesn't scream and holler as much [as Majeski], but they both get their point across, and they both know what they're doing."
Strain, 37, grew up in Hager City,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wis.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], across the Mississippi River from Red Wing. He played college football at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and was an assistant coach there and at North Dakota. Since 1999 he has been an assistant at Ashwaubenon High School near Green Bay.
He wanted to be a head coach and he wanted to be closer to home. Until he finds a place to live in Hastings, Strain, who is single, is staying with his mother in Hager City and making the 40-minute drive to Hastings and back each day.
"There's a proud tradition here, obviously," Strain said. "It was an attractive job and there are a lot of good things in place."
Seppala,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 27, knew exactly what was in place when he took over in Apple Valley. He began helping out the volleyball coaches there when he was still in high school. After graduating from Apple Valley 1998, he went to the University of Minnesota, got his degree in 2002 and came back to Apple Valley as a teacher and coach.
"My point of view has been to not try and compare," he said. "The bottom line is to take all the stuff I learned from [Weaver] and from being there, and be the best I can be and not worry about anything else in terms of trying to match anything he has done. I've certainly learned a lot in coaching with him."
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unlike the Hastings football team, the Apple Valley volleyballers have a good handle on what to expect as the new season begins. But still .
