'Tis the season to help Clothe
The leaves are changing colors. The temperature has dipped from balmy to brisk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Stores are advertising their pre-pre-pre-Christmas sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The season for Clothe-A-Child also is upon us and The News-Herald is seeking donors and volunteers for its 28th season.
The program helps children between ages 5 and 12 from low-income families buy new clothes. It's funded by donations from individuals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], schools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], businesses and organizations. The News-Herald pays the administrative fees for the charity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so all donations go to the children.
"To me, that's huge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Laura Gray,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the new director of Clothe-A-Child. "Literally 100 percent of the money people donate goes to shopping with the kids."
As one of eight kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gray said she could understand what it was like to not have money for new clothes.
Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gray - who lives in Concord Township with her three children and husband - organizes the program.
She meets with families who need help,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enlists volunteer shoppers and arranges the shopping trips.
Gray is looking for volunteer shoppers who could accompany a child to the Sears and Payless Shoes at the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She also hopes to find a volunteer who will help schedule the shopping trips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Gray is visiting local high schools to find volunteers, who must be 18 or older. She said she has nothing but respect for volunteers who have been with Clothe-A-Child for years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is important to introduce the program to a new generation who could, one day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be potential donors.
