Sydney woman killer in fear
A woman accused of being an accessory after the fatal stabbing of a Sydney teenager said she didn't go to police sooner because she feared for her life, a Supreme Court jury has heard.
Veronica Salas-Collard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 21, has pleaded not guilty to being an accessory after the murder of a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, at North St Marys in Sydney's west on December 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010.
He and another man, who is not on trial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are accused of attacking three brothers in the street after the youngest refused to give them a cigarette, stabbing the 17-year-old boy up to 30 times and leaving him in a gutter to die.
The crown alleges that after the killing, Salas-Collard fled with the second man, who can only be identified as AB, and helped him avoid arrest by harbouring him in the homes of family and friends.
She said in a police video interview broadcast to the court that she didn't go to the police sooner because she was afraid AB might hurt her.
'I've been trying to get away for the past three days, to get to a police station,' she told detectives two weeks after the murder.
'I wanted to let them question me so I could get myself out of whatever I was caught up in.'
She said AB had never been violent towards her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'The (AB) I know has never,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ever hurt me, but then again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had second thoughts. If he was capable of doing something like that to someone else,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I didn't know what I was in for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' she said.
'In the past he's raised his voice, and just the look in his eyes was enough to scare me.'
The court heard that on the night of the killing, AB and Loveridge went out after a long drinking session.
When they returned at 2.30am, Salas-Collard said, they told her they had hurt someone and asked her to go to the scene with them so they could move the body.
'They said, 'We've killed him.' . I think they were trying to get rid of the body or the evidence, I don't know,' she said.
The court has heard another witness saw flecks of blood on Loveridge's new white sneakers before the two men stripped off their clothes and bundled them into plastic bags for disposal.
But Salas-Collard said at first she didn't believe they had killed anyone because she didn't see the victim's body or any blood on their clothes.
'I thought they were pulling my leg. That's why I went for a walk back with them (to the scene),' she said.
While hiding with AB at his sister's house, Salas-Collard said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they looked for news of the victim on the internet.
'At first I think it was all a big joke to him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when I read out, 'He died on the way to hospital,' (AB's) face changed. I don't think he expected him to die,' she told police.
