Shoe couturier Jimmy Choo talks about his latest project
Datuk Jimmy Choo plans to incorporate ethnic fabrics into his latest collection of shoes. The final result will be on display at the 1Malaysia International Shoe Festival. Here he is with textile specialist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Zubaidah Sual.
Once Datuk Jimmy Choo gets into the topic of shoes, he can't stop. The footwear maverick discusses his passion and his latest project over lunch.
JIMMY Choo - or Datuk, if you're into formalities - was due to arrive at L'Heritage restaurant in The Royale Chulan Hotel Kuala Lumpur for lunch with the media any minute.
When he finally does,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking dapper as usual in a customary black suit, heads snap to attention and camera shutters go click-click-click.
After several perfunctory hellos and handshakes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Malaysia's most celebrated shoe couturier sidles into an empty seat across from me. The excited chatter that filled the room only moments before dies abruptly. What is it about Choo that commands respect so easily?
His legendary name?
His eye for beautiful shoes?
His immaculate dressing?
Whatever the reason, it's this very ability to stop people in their tracks that landed Choo a stint as Tourism Ambassador for the country.
Today, he's out to fulfill that role,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by promoting the 1Malaysia International Shoe Festival (MISF) that's happening this week. The four-day affair, themed 1Malaysia - Walking in Unity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sole of the Nation, will showcase Choo's own line of handcrafted couture shoes (under Jimmy Choo Capsule Couture Collection) alongside 150 other local and international brands.
"I think the festival marks a step forward for our local shoe industry because in the old days, our manufacturers have to travel abroad for exhibitions. MISF makes it easier to showcase the immense talent we have in Malaysia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says the Penang-born, London-based Choo.
Sitting across from me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Choo looks less like a person whose name has been immortalised in countless fashion magazines and movies, and more like a benevolent uncle everyone wants to meet.
Despite the slicked-back hair and equally sleek facade, he is a traditionalist at heart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], prattling off words like "family" and "hard work" - expressions that are increasingly meaningless in today's society - in between mouthfuls of the amuse bouche.
It's no wonder then that, for the festival, Choo himself will be coming up with eight different artisanal shoes strongly influenced by time-honoured heritage and design. Entitled Mahkota, the collection incorporates a precious array of ethnic fabrics, from the common (tekat and songket) to the unusual (pua kumbu,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pua sungkit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dastar, tohlian, kelingkan and telepok). Hand-woven and hand-embroidered using traditional methods that are passed down from generations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these fabrics are part of a vanishing craft.
"We're planning to incorporate these into the soles, the heels, the straps. You can say it's a tribute to our rich artistic culture,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Choo, showing us some preliminary sketches of the designs.
Choo, who is a firm believer in creativity through skills, claims that "a designer should not just be someone who is good at sketching but also be well-versed and knowledgeable in every aspect of the making of any creation". But as most of these fabrics are tough to come by, sourcing proved to be a huge challenge for Choo, who eventually appointed textile specialist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Zubaidah Sual, especially for the project.
"I initially intended to include limar as one of the fabric types but limar is more or less extinct and no longer being produced in Malaysia. It is only being woven in Indonesia," he explains.
Not one to settle on mediocrity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Choo intends to house his collection in a gallery that's in a shape of a mahkota, or giant crown. Called the Sogno Gallery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which means "dream" in Italian, it will feature the latest shoe collections by foreign labels that have made their presence felt in Malaysia.
As for what his wife - also a qualified shoe designer - thinks of his current collection, Choo says the missus has given him her nod of approval. "She loves them. She would not manage my business if she doesn't," he says.
He adds: "Of course, we also need to acknowledge the people and the skills involved in producing the fabrics that go into my shoes. The same thing applies to the art of shoe- making - it is very much part of our heritage and it will soon be gone if not properly preserved."
