Shellys shoes deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
THE family who gave Britain's Teddy Boys crepe soles in the 1950s and introduced winkle-pickers in the 1960s sold their shoe shop empire for £1.5million yesterday.
Cult chain Shellys - owned by the Robbins family - remained at the cutting edge of fashion by making Doc Martens and platform shoes trendy in the 1970s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Rival firm Stylo, owner of the Barratts and Priceless shoe chains, clinched the deal for the 11 stores, which include branches in London, Birmingham,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Manchester and Leeds.
Shellys was launched in 1945 as Direct Shoe Supplies by Ralph Robbins in London's Carnaby Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The shops were renamed in 1969 after his son Shelly - the current boss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He will stay on as a consultant. The dad-of-three,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 45,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], started working in the stores 30 years ago with his sister Avril and brother Nigel.
The firm famously never advertised but one fashion guru said in the 1980s: "If it's not in Shellys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's not in fashion."
The chain had sales of £21.5million last year but made a pre-tax loss of £2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].4million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
SHELLYS has been leading the footwear fashion pack since introducing crepe soles to Britain's high streets back in the 1950s.
Other delights generated by the company's design house over the years include winkle-pickers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], platforms and Chelsea boots.
And for today's shoe-a-holics on a budget it is still the perfect place to pick up a pair of catwalk copycats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
One of this season's biggest sellers have been the slouched boots as seen on the Dolce Gabbana catwalk.
And at £54.99,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll save yourself a couple of hundred pounds.
Even the celebs are impressed. Kylie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cat Deeley and Geri Halliwell all own a pair of Shellys.
And the Sugababes stepped out in them at this year's Brits.
Shellys shoes are available throughout the UK.
