Hundreds of families geared up for the new school year at the ninth annual Shoes 4 School event by getting a free new pair of shoes and backpacks full of supplies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Knoxville Area Urban League teamed up with car rental company Enterprise to provide more than 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 children with new shoes.
"One of the most satisfying things to me is when a child looks up into your eyes and says thank you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Phyllis Nichols with the Urban League said. "And I only need that one time to get me through the year."
The carnival-style event began with attendees releasing balloons to signify the start of the new school year. After getting their shoes and school supplies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kids enjoyed hot dogs and snow cones and tried the many inflatable rides in the park.
Tim Romero,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regional vice president of Enterprise and Urban League board member,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Enterprise has sponsored the event every year because so many children in the community need simple things like shoes and school supplies.
