Preschool collects shoes for Iraqi children
ENCINITAS When teacher Sarah Goldman asked her brother, an Army lieutenant stationed in Baghdad, what amenities he needed, he didn hesitate to reply "chocolate."
But after he thought about it, he e-mailed back "children shoes."
Part of Justin Goldman assignment in Baghdad was to build a kindergarten and set up a children hospital with his platoon, C Company, 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fort Hood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Texas.
Most of the kids he observed didn have shoes.
"It hit home for both of us," Sarah Goldman said. "It so hot out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and there all these little kids walking around barefoot."
Goldman teaches her brother 2-year-old daughter, Cassidy, at Early Explorations in Olivenhain. She mails and e-mails him regularly with photographs and updates.
When the teachers and parents at the school heard her plan to send supplies, they were eager to help,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she said. Teachers organized poster art projects for their students and put collection boxes in their classrooms. The school donated money for shipping, which cost about $600, school director Lori Pettine said.
"Everybody got really involved, and it was really cute," Pettine said.
Last month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they shipped 15 large boxes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and now they are collecting more items mostly shoes for a second delivery.
"Everyone loved the stuff," Sarah Goldman said. The shoes, chocolate and women toiletries for female soldiers were particularly popular,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she said.
"When people send stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they don usually think of the girls," she said. But Goldman packed two boxes full of women deodorant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], razors, lotion, shampoo, conditioner and scented body wash.
The platoon receives some items for personal hygiene, but they must buy many themselves, and choices are limited.
For the Iraqi children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Goldman included candy and 12 pairs of new and used shoes. One parent who is a dentist contributed a bag of toothbrushes.
Goldman brother sent back photographs of the kids hamming it up brushing their teeth. And others of the children in the hospital.
"A lot of those really stood out because they were more sad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Goldman said. "But (the soldiers) were there to try to brighten their day."
Pettine said the pictures were touching,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It sounds so far away and then when you see faces of children and the servicemen and women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it brings it all home we all connected in some way," Pettine said.
Chocolate isn available in Baghdad, and Justin Goldman was happy to find what he missed most in one box: plain M Double Stuf Oreos and Aquafresh Extreme Clean toothpaste,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his sister said.
Sarah and Justin Goldman and their parents have lived in La Costa since 1981. She was in the first graduating class of La Costa Canyon High School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Justin Goldman graduated from San Marcos High School. He has been in Baghdad five months and may return home by January.
