Guwahati,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jan 18 (PTI) People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has written to Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urging him to introduce only eco-friendly canvas or other non-leather footwear as uniforms in schools. ''This measure would protect animals and the environment and also empower children with the opportunity to be animal and eco-friendly consumers", PETA India's Corporate and Government Affairs Liaison Sarfaraz Syed said in a release today. ''Most children naturally care for animals and the environment and prefer wearing more comfortable canvas shoes over leather or other materials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so transitioning to canvas- only shoes for all school uniforms would be an ideal situation for all - children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], animals and the environment'',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said. PETA's investigations have found that cows and other animals are often so severely crowded in trucks on their way to slaughter houses that many animals sustain serious injuries or die when they are crushed or gored by the horns of others. Besides,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turning the skins of cows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], buffaloes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sheep and goats into leather requires huge quantities of toxic chemicals and runoffs from leather tanneries poison local rivers and streams. The toxic chemicals that tannery workers are exposed to on a daily basis have been linked to nervous disorders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], skin and respiratory infections and even cancer. Canvas, on the other hand, requires relatively little maintenance compared to other popular shoe materials, including leather and as a result, it has become extremely popular among environmentalists who have pushed for the use of canvas tote bags and other applications of the material,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Syed added.
