Orlando Orlando Magic
I hope this letter finds you well. I writing this because I am seriously concerned about our status as NBA Fans and much more so as our status as a City I use the pronouns and because I too am included in the masses that support the Orlando Magic year in and year out. As a follower of basketball for decades, and a supporter of our hometown team for most of its existence (we talk about the years from 1993-1996 later),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I look around and see a disappointing contingency filling the seats of the Amway Arena. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I writing this as a favor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nay, a request that we take what I write as a change of action,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a resolution if you will, for the upcoming new year.
First off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I beg of each and every one of you to get to the games on time. I know that the traffic patterns downtown are terrible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I-4 traffic is atrocious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the structure of the Amway Arena isn really friendly for parking and pedestrians (not to mention the fact that the concessions/bathroom situation at the arena requires a 30 minute allotment of time to get a hot dog), but the games start at 7pm. There is no reason why we,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as fans, cannot make it into our seats in time for the pre-game introductions. Rarely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if ever do we fill the seats during tip-off and that a shame. Even during big-time games against the Lakers or the Celtics, it not until the 2nd quarter do we see a max capacity crowd.
Furthermore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I know traffic is terrible going home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when there are 10 minutes left in the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there cannot be a conceivable reason for you to leave. Whether we up by 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 15, or 50, it a slap in the face for the team to celebrate a win in front of a meer 5,000 fans. Years ago, in their infinite wisdom, the city of Orlando decided to make the seats a deep red, making it absurdly noticeable when people have left. Don any of you think this shows off the wrong impression when our games are broadcast in front of a national audience? You don think other cities laugh at us when it comes to fan when they see blotches of red as the clock is winding down? What happened to our loyalty? What happened to sticking it out for every minute? Are we that busy of individuals to where a Magic game is just a thing to do? And don give me that a small market, 1 team town business. Teams like Sacramento,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Oklahoma City, and San Antonio seem to do just fine in terms of staying in their seats. Lakers, Celtics, Cavs),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it disappointing to see around 40% of the crowd as fans of the other team. I get it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we a transient city, and a majority of our residents aren originally from here driving around the city, seeing the vast support around town of people donning Dwight Howard jerseys, and plastering Magic magnets on their cars know we are capable of creating a sea of blue and white and creating a true home court advantage. I know that the economy is bad and many of us would rather use any income on food and rent, but Magic ticket prices are actually one of the lowest in the leagues. This is why other teams feel like they can come into Orlando and push the Magic around. It a quasi-home game for Boston when they look up and see spots of green in the crowd. Watching the Christmas game on ABC (as I was out of town on official Examiner business), I heard an overwhelming amount of cheering whenever the Celtics scored a basket know it wasn a majority of the crowd, but it was enough to pick up on a national level,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that just sad. And don even get me started about how dejected we can be when our team is losing. It was sickening during Game 5 of the Finals to see that many Lakers jerseys in the stands. This is the summit of everything NBA, and although the Magic were down 3-1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was no reason why we, as so called fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sold out and gave our tickets to the opposition.
It disheartening to see that our for its team is extremely fickle. We claim to love our team when they winning, yet, are mysteriously absent during a regular season Magic/Bobcats game. We say how we been following the team for years, but frequently go there a game tonight? I not down on fair-weather fans, nor would I prevent a new fan from joining in on the fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if we don show it with a presence in the stands, Orlando will always be seen as a second rate town, no matter how fancy our new arena may be.
Which brings me to the actual game-time experience can result in the greatest crowd in the league, or one of the most embarrassing experiences for anyone who gone to a game outside of the City Beautiful. This city desperately needs a celebrity to be there at every game! I not saying that we need the Jack Nicholson or Spike Lee to be there, but we need more than just Fat Guy or the elderly man who wears the plaid sweater vests (although,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he is my favorite whenever trying to yell at the refs. He sits right behind the Magic bench and fans his arms in disapproval hilarious). With the exception of a certain golfer who will probably no longer make an appearance courtside, we have no real celebrities to tout in this city and promote just how amazing the Magic game experience can be!
We also have a crowd and a venue that can provide the loudest environment in the entire country. Rolling Stones, Elton John, Gwen Stefani,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.) avoid playing at the Amway Arena because the acoustics there downright suck. We, as Magic fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can use that to our advantage! I been there numerous times where it becomes deafening during timeouts or when the opposition has the ball. I witnessed pandemonium in the seats during the final ticking seconds. We have Paul Porter, one of the best PA Announcers in the country on our side! But those moments are very sporadic and infrequent. A majority of the time, we having to sit through a timeout hoping that Days or Just Wanna Have Fun pumps us up and that an inaudible commercial gets us laughing (I sorry, but Simon, the Amway Arena audio director, is one of the worst audio guys in the history of sports. As a former audio guy myself, I can tell you how many times the mood of the crowd as died because of the poor and terrible music selections and miscues on the audio level). We have the ability to provide a true court advantage at every single game, putting us on the same level as Arco Arena or a Philadelphia Eagles football game we waste it by sitting in our seats and never really getting excited. And you wonder why we don get the national coverage we deserve term is short for meaning person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as for a cause Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we forgotten the meaning of what a is and have just become meaning your kids a Nintendo DS to play while you get drunk and try to hit on the cheerleaders when you really should be watching the game. Again, I seen an Orlando crowd motivated by unreasonable enthusiasm, but that shouldn be a past tense thing needs to be every game. I submit that we create our own fanatic organization to separate ourselves from the rest of the league. Think about it, you have the Sox Nation and Nation why not the Nation Better yet, why not be creative and unique (I sick about hearing of the Gator Nation, Seminole Nation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc, etc with the Nations and start the Maniacs Think about it, if we become that true epitome of and bring forth to each game an environment where our team can find relaxation while the other teams find discomfort,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would that not be the true definition of a court advantage Would that not show true support to the organization we claim to love? How would that not make ESPN 27 men arguing shows (PTI, The Sports Reporters, Around the Horn, Rome Is Burning, NBA Shootaround, every non-highlight segment on SportsCenter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.)? Wouldn it be great to see Jay Mariotti or Tony Kornheiser talk about how crazy it is to play in Orlando if you aren wearing the blue and white? We have the potential to be the Maniacs We unfortunately are letting those wearing LeBron and Kobe jerseys take over.
Which brings me to the final and most important topic, Magic Fans need to have I don mean passion in terms of cheering for our team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but a passion that makes Orlando a true community, a brotherhood if you will (not to quote the Adidas campaign). Don know what I talking about? Go to North Carolina wearing a Duke t-shirt and see what reactions you get. Go up to Green Bay and talk about Brett Favre and listen to the responses. These fans, the people who wake up loving their team have passion. We, in Orlando,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do not. We cheer Hedo Turkoglu in his return to Orlando, even though that was the same person who quit on our team to chase more money; even though our organization was the perfect fit for him and his closest chance at winning a title. If this were any other job scenario, we would be angry that someone would be willing to leave a company to make $10 mil a year instead of $9 mil (numbers not exact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I just going for dramatic effect here). However, even though Turk is still loved in this city, we boo Grant Hill for leaving the team after 7 injury filled seasons. I agree with the jeers towards the former of our franchise but how come he is deemed the villain, but Turk is a hero? I know Hedo helped take us to the Finals, but aren his actions just as devious as Grant was? And we still boo Tracy McGrady for quitting on the team and demanding a trade over 5 years ago, even though during his entire tenure here, management did nothing for T-Mac.
What I getting at is, we have no genuine passion for the city. When we try to cheer on Darrell Armstrong when he was on the Nets or Pacers, half of the crowd asks why we are cheering that one guy on the other team. We try to establish a hatred for some players and a love for others, but because of the mentality of most Magic fans, it gets lost during the sea of half cheers and half boos. It becomes confusing when most of our hatred is towards the referees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet when Kobe is burning us for 40 points,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we sit in silence and make it seem as if we ok with what happening on the court. And until we have that to where an outsider from anywhere in the country can come into our city limits and know EXACTLY who we love and who we hate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we still fall short as the supporters of our franchise.
Look, I not saying everyone needs to have this talk. There a thousands of die-hard fans out there who would blow me out of the water when it comes to support of Orlando and its history. But I hope that these die-hards can agree and see the crowd I trying to target. We have more than half a season to go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and with football winding down, there is no reason why we can put Orlando on the map as one of the toughest places to play in the league and genuinely establish that court advantage I hope we don have to have this talk again soon really don So, please, let step up as members of the Maniacs and act like rather than just Samsel Orlando Magic Examiner and Fanatic
