Obama Command to 'Put on Your Marching Shoes' Causes Controversy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama has given the Congressional Black Caucus its marching orders, so to speak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at an event in Phoenix. His commandment seems to have caused another controversy among his supporters.
According to the Associated Press,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], evoking the civil rights struggle and attempting to channel Martin Luther King Jr., Obama shouted, "Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We have work to do."
The fact Obama is having to rally the base of his base,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is remarkable, considering the election is less than 14 months away. A slippage in Jewish support,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as shown in the Democratic defeat in the New York 9th special congressional election, has proven particularly troubling. Obama has certainly not used combative language to Jewish supporters, miffed as they are about the president's soft support for Israel. This suggests to people like Waters that Obama, like most Democratic office holders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is taking black voters for granted.
Al Sharpton, a man much accustomed to complaining and marching,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], defended the president, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stating the message was the right one to give, according to the New York Daily News.
With economic malaise continuing, with minorities hardest hit, erstwhile Obama supporters are wondering whether their support had been worth it. Some,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even in the black community, have openly wondered whether a President Hillary Clinton would have been a better deal.
Obama is in a quandary. The more he pays attention to core, liberal constituencies, the more he runs the risk of alienating independent, swing voters whom he will need to win reelection next year. Keeping one's base happy while reaching out to independents is a difficult political dance that the president may be not able to perform.
