Let the kids be kids Local Gold Coast News
COLOUR me oversensitive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I find something kind of creepy about the sight of a 14-year-old pop singer serenading a 12-year-old girl.
Let me be clear -- Cody Simpson and his young serenadees did nothing wrong at Pacific Fair yesterday. They are doing what kids do these days when they either a celebrity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or in the presence of celebrities.
Is it Justin Bieber fault? Jessica Simpson Daisy Dukes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Was it Britney fault,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Michael Jackson and his crotch-grabbing? Madonna pointy bras? Elvis hips?
I don know.
I not a parent, so I can only guess at how hard it is to bring up a teenager these days.
Everyone got to have the latest gadget, the newest sneakers, the dopiest haircuts, and the sexiest outfits. How do you say no to all that?
Why has all that stuff become so important to our kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Is it the media fault, or is it because the kids these days are being brought up by people who were also spoiled rotten?
Beats me.
I know a fair amount about being spoiled, by the way. I the only child of well-off parents. I knew how to get what I wanted.
I also learned, I suspect, that being 12 years old and being sung to by a 14-year-old guy who doesn know me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but is singing I know your heart seen better times is actually pretty bloody silly.
I just not sure today 12-year-old girls know the same.
I like to think today 12, 13 and 14-year-olds know little about seduction, serenading,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sex or anything even vaguely approaching it, but I suspect that in this day and age that a naive hope.
I just find it all a bit sad that we live in a world that expects 14-year-old boys to act like grown men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
But then again I find it sad that we live in a world that tells girls to be both thinner AND happy with their bodies the way they are, all in the same edition of Who magazine. Or New Idea. Or Women Weekly. Or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], god forbid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Zoo.
