Kings 2002 series altered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Convicted ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy alleges in a letter filed in a sentencing court that referees altered two recent playoff series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the 2002 Western Conference finals between the Lakers and the Sacramento Kings.
The Lakers won a foul-marred Game 6, tying the series at three victories apiece. Van Gundy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who now works as a TV commentator, later backed away from his statement.
The letter further alleges that two referees Donaghy refers to as "company men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," wished to extend a 2002 series to seven games. Although it's not mentioned specifically, the details indicate it was Game 6 of the Lakers-Kings series.
Donaghy will be sentenced next month on felony charges that he took cash from gamblers and bet on league games while working as a referee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"All I can say is that he's looking for anything that will somehow shorten the sentence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's not Advertisement
going to happen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," NBA commissioner David Stern said. "This is criminal activity that Tim Donaghy has admitted to,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this is sour grapes with respect to his lawyer's attempt to say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], `Oh, I made a mistake."'
Former Lakers superstar Magic Johnson also disputed Donaghy's allegations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I've been a part of this league going on almost 30years (and) I've never seen it happen. . I'm not buying it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Johnson, who now serves as co-owner of the Lakers.
Asked about Game 6 in 2002,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lakers coach Phil Jackson said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Was that after the fifth game after we had the game stolen from us after a bad call out of bounds and they gave the ball back to Sacramento and they made a 3-point shot?
"There's a lot of things going on in these games and they're suspicious, but I don't want to throw it to back there."
Shrill sounds: Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never shy about sharing his opinions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had some harsh words for Kobe Bryant after sitting courtside at Game2 in Boston.
