Jays reliever Purcey has really big shoes to fill
"People love looking at my shoes," Purcey says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playing good sport by answering questions about his feet that might make more uptight players cringe and turn away.
Nike furnishes him with running shoes, and his size is not a problem for them. His baseball spikes, though, are a custom order.
Shopping for footwear has always been a challenge for Purcey. But one day in 2008, he was walking around the Loop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chicago's downtown historical shopping area,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when he stumbled upon a rare find: Altman's Men's Shoes and Boots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 75-year-old store boasting 27 stock rooms holding 50,000 pairs of shoes, in sizes 5 to 19 and widths AAAA to EEE.
"They don't have a website,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're old school in there; lots of shoes on shelves, and an old-school cash register. And they have, like, 18 storage spaces in the back . . . you don't see a store like that much any more."
There are, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other shopping options. Purcey has discovered that you can find just about anything you need on the Internet.
"I go to (online retailer) Odd Ball, they have size 13 to 20 . . . and Zappos has a good selection, and then there's Big Shoes in Austin (Texas),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those are the sites I like to go to," he says.
Purcey has even gone to a mall and come away with a set of shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The only store I've found (in a mall) is Nordstrom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says. "I go in there and I might actually find something,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but everywhere else, I don't even bother."
On those occasions, he is usually met with gawking stares and incredulity from store clerks. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds he's no small man, but his feet still have the power to surprise.
"One time I went into Nordstrom with one of our trainers when we were both in AA (New Hampshire)," Purcey recalls.
"He's a size 6 and I said, 'Do you have his size?' and then I said, 'Do you have a size 18 in this?' . . . They looked at us and said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'You guys are joking, right? You're kidding.' But we weren't kidding."
All the kidding is left to his teammates and friends.
"Ever since I was in high school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd have friends say they were watching me pitch on TV and how big my feet looked on the television," Purcey says.
But they don't slow him down or trip him up. He can run the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
That athletic ability, coming from such a monster pair of feet, is something that amazes Purcey's teammates.
Frasor and Jesse Litsch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], among others, have grabbed one of Purcey's shoes - when he wasn't around - and tried walking in them.
"I can almost put two of my feet in one of his shoes," Frasor says.
There are the resident nicknames and joking around, but Jesse Carlson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has known Purcey longer than any other Jay - seven years dating back to the minor leagues - doesn't joke about the feet.
