Ford hot Fiesta ST uncovered
The most fiery Fiesta yet is about to join the hot hatch party - and Auto Express has all the details on why Ford's latest pocket rocket is set to score sales gold. This is the new flagship ST, which will feature a head-turning look and a mighty 1.6-litre turbocharged engine.
We caught the Renaultsport Clio 200 rival undergoing high-speed testing at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany, and following on from the prototype we snapped in Issue 1,134,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these latest pictures show that the racy hatch gets the same dramatic grille as its bigger brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Focus ST.
As you can see from our spy shots, it's a huge trapezoidal opening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it promises to give the turbocharged supermini some real visual bite. At the rear, the Fiesta will get a dramatic roof spoiler,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with a bold black plastic diffuser and two huge exhaust pipes at either side of the car.
Factor in widened wheelarches, side skirts, big alloys, a host of ST badges and, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a bright colour, and it will really set pulses racing. But that front grille isn't only for show - this fearsome intake helps feed cool air to the Fiesta's punchy motor. With rivals such as Vauxhall's Corsa VXR all producing 200bhp,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ford's Global Performance Vehicles division has had to raise its game.
The previous-generation Fiesta ST delivered only 150bhp, but thanks to the firm's 1.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, the new model will pump out at least an extra 50bhp. The motor also gives the ST a link to Ford's mighty Fiesta World Rally Championship entry, which has a similar powerplant.
There are no official performance details,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with a sophisticated torque vectoring system borrowed from the latest Focus - to ensure maximum traction - the ST should cover 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, and hit a 140mph top speed.
A six-speed manual gearbox is likely to be the only option - Ford is expected to keep things simple in this area, with no heavy dual-clutch PowerShift auto offered. As well as being very fast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the new ST should be efficient,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too. Thanks to the frugal EcoBoost unit, owners can expect around 40mpg on the combined cycle.
To make the ST as adept at cornering as it is on the straights, it will get lowered and stiffened suspension, along with uprated brakes.
Inside,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there will be Recaro sports seats, together with ST badging. A world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March is most likely, as the Focus ST isn't scheduled to reach dealers until next spring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ahead of the hot Fiesta.
Ford will wait until mid-2012 for the car to go on sale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coinciding with the launch of a facelifted and revised Fiesta.
I'd have considered buying one of these as a runabout if they had made it look more like the existing Zetec S Fiesta model, and not put that god awful grill on it.
What were the design bods at Ford thinking?
Big gaping holes at front = very naff.
Stick to the prior design, it looked cool. From the front you can clearly see Recaro seats but from the back view those headrests in the window definitely aren't Recaro!
I'd also be very surprised if Ford released photos of the ST this early if they're going to announce a facelift model in 2012 at the same time. Surely the 2012 Fiesta ST would carry over the same styling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? - not that we know what the facelift will look like yet.
Given Ford's recent history I doubt they'll pass the trapezoid grille to the Fiesta ST but rather give its own character,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I think BHP in the Fiesta ST is long over due but I don't see why the original ST couldn't have had BHP in the first place. I realise there is a class difference but the 2004 Honda Civic Type R had a normally aspirated 2 litre engine and had BHP which it used to great effect. Ford stuck a 2 litre TURBOCHARGED unit in the Fiesta and then held the power back at 150BHP. Where is the sense in that?
In my opinion Ford missed a great opportunity with the Fiesta ST. They could have been selling a Civic beater (or at the very least a match for it) at anything up to £3,000 less.
If Ford continue to pin down power to match their rivals they will always be in the shadows of the competition.
The Focus ST is another example. it shares an engine and platform with the Mazda 3 MPS but the Mazda is more powerful, quicker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], faster and £5,000 less. Ford need to stop holding their cars back and start holding their prices back. Their a very popular manufacturer and will sell whatever they make so there is no need for them to cost more than its rivals.
