Step 2
Final steps and assemblyThe prepping and painting from the leg pads was time intensive, but luckily I discovered those pretty in early stages and did that actually work first. I made a basic template from the form of the panel from sketchpad paper (also folded that in half to check to ensure both halves were as equal as you possibly can) and then ensured to give myself about a half an inch extra when I cut it from the fabric and so i could fold the edges in and hope that the heat-adhesive works to keep it together. That job of ironing again and again to get it to operate was a big pain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but eventually I acquired it to stay. I made use of an item called n Bond Ultrahold iron-on adhesive that arrived a roll 10 yards long and 7/8 wide. It has paper somewhere, and you've got to first iron the adhesive-side down to the fabric until it stays (that takes forever),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then remove the paper backing, fold the material over might iron again to get it to adhere (this took even longer). I used two strips for each side to keep the fake in, then another strip to keep the fronts and backs together therefore the panel didn pop open between your two layers.
Next, I'd to mostly visually measure out where the buttons would be placed, because I not really a mathematician either! The buttons over the top were fairly easy to space out, but on the sides was a different story. No matter how much measuring I attempted to do, I couldn have them evenly spaced, so I just fudged it. I used an Exacto to poke a hole through the fabric of the panel to put each brad through after which disseminate the prongs at the spine to hold it as being tight as you possibly can. Once that was done, I attached velcro squares about the back over all of the prongs from the buttons with Gorilla glue (unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all I had was the wood glue, that we don recommend using!). I had to press all the pieces down with heavy what to make sure the velcro would stay there although it dried. Once which was done, I placed the panel within the front from the jacket and lined up where I wanted it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then marked about the jacket where I needed all the other bits of velcro to become, and repeated the entire process of gluing all those onto the front of the jacket. When everything was dry, I attached the panel to the jacket to see how it looked. My biggest concern was that in getting in and out of the jacket, my son might rip the velcro quickly. I probably have him pull the jacket over his head when he puts it on so we just pull it open in a couple of spots simply to play it safe.
The broom- a thing that up to the finish have been fairly straightforward became a pain in the backside when I had to wrap it with the refrigerator coil. The coil seemed flexible enough in the beginning, however it turns out it really doesn enjoy being bent so tightly. To get it in which to stay place instead of it sliding itself up the handle with every wrap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had to it just a little closer to the center after which wrap it separately down from that spot and up from that spot. I began by making the longer footrest first and then started wrapping the coil. Once the coil wasn cooperating, I had to loosen it up and discover an area I could cinch it on each side of (some of the bristle stems had knots that ended up holding the coil in position so it wouldn slide in the broom handle), i quickly could tighten the coil support and finish wrapping it, make the smaller footrest and finally cut off the surplus with a small pipe cutter. That offered me a workout, and I don recommend trying that if there is a risk of hernia (because I almost gave myself one). If I knew of some other way of doing that, also it wasn the day before trick-or-treating, I might get it done differently. I had no idea after i started that it would be so hard to wrap and keep in place.
Please give me some feedback on alternatives for this costume- what types of glue would you use? Is there a better method to put this together without having to hire a seamstress and prop maker? What are some methods to save even more money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], besides lucking out at Goodwill and finding some cheap goodies? Is there an alternative to using refrigerator coil that will weigh less therefore the poor kid that has to transport it won wind up making Mom carry it for him? It did end up having some heft to it, a little too much for a nine-year-old to transport.
If anyone constitutes a leather or faux-leather jacket similar to this (for any kid) please post it and inform us the way you made it (and just how much it cost). I would have loved to do that, however with no money and difficulty finding used leather jackets inside a kid size (and a matching bit of leather or faux leather in the craft store to match it), it simply wasn an option this year. I also considered putting epaulettes on the shoulders and using one or two braided ropes with an epaulette and under the arm (military style) to designate team colors, however i didn know how to attach fake epaulettes in a suitable way without possibly ruining the jacket if I messed up. How would you show team colors on a jacket such as this?
