Enjoying NHL series vicariously
The Montreal Canadiens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the last glimmer of hope to bring a Stanley Cup home to Canada in this 2010 playoff year, pulled up their socks and got back in their Eastern Conference championship series with the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beating the Flyers on home ice to narrow the series to 2-1.
They need to do it again tonight in Montreal. Going strictly by the numbers, the Canadiens don't have to win tonight, but for all intents and purposes it's a must-win game: climbing out of yet another 3-1 series hole will be too much to ask, even for these resilient Habs. You know what happens when you go to the well too often,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], right?
We noticed a big drop-off in Habs hats and jerseys this week after they were handed their lunch by Philly in the first two games of the series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in which the Canadiens were shutout twice and looked small against the big bashing Flyers. A good friend of mine is a huge Flyer fan, has been since the 1980s. He's been through the Lindros-Bob Clarke-the-GM years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then years of nothing, or next to it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and now is experiencing redemption. He called me up after Philadelphia completed their comeback against the Boston Bruins and was as happy as a pig in mud, as you could imagine (I now live vicariously through the NHL success of other fans).
There is an occasional Flyer fan to be found; almost every day I walk by a house near the Aberdeen Business Centre - the guy who lives there has a big Flyers flag in a window and has a Flyers' logo-adorned license plate on the front of his pickup. He's kept them there for a couple of years, at least,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so it's not like he suddenly hopped on a bandwagon and ran out to buy a Flyers hat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like a guy did last Saturday up at the mall.
The Chicago Blackhawks - you run across an occasional diehard Hawks' fan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well - look like they'll be waiting for whomever survives the Philly-Montreal series. The Blackhawks took the first two games out in San Jose - as usual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Sharks are wilting when the heat is turned up - and a young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talented but now playoff-hardened Chicago team looks like the Stanley Cup favorite.
Non-Sports Thought of the Week: So you're an MP and you don't want the public to take a gander at your expense accounts. Lakers are primed for a title repeat. It's also apparent that nobody in that league can play defence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at least not enough to make a difference. Just run and gun up and down the court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 48 minutes of monotony. Even with an honest-to-goodness effort, I am so not getting it. You can,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], quite literally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], see more interesting basketball at a local high school, or at one of those non-stop men's leagues operating down at the junior high school. They play defence down there - not all of them but some of them - although a league insider said some guys get the calls from the officials. Then another league insider said some guys do a lot of on-court yapping and won't shut up. Maybe it really is like the NBA.
