Dozens hospitalised after malaria outbreak in Landikotal
"With summer season approaching,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], malaria has broken out in Charbagh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adil Khad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kam Shalman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Loey Shalman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Torkham,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bacha Mina and other remote areas of Landikotal subdivision," he added.
Dr Khalid Javed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was examining the malaria patients,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told this scribe that heaps of garbage, stagnant water and scant sanitation facilities were the factors that led to the mosquito breeding and spread of the disease.
The doctor said the health staff members were planning to launch a campaign to raise awareness among people about the mosquitoes and how they reproduce. "Children under five years of age and pregnant women have high risk of catching malaria as their immune system is usually weak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Five-year old Haleema,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], draped in a red shawl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wearing black shoes and a small ring in her nose, was diagnosed as malaria positive. Flanked by her veiled aunt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Haleema had been brought from Gagra village and was carrying her laboratory tests.
Her aunt said Haleema had been diagnosed malaria positive about two hours ago and they were now waiting for medicines as a large number of malaria patients were coming to the health facility,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
A health official said Khugakhel, Charbagh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ali Masjid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bacha Mina and Torkham were the most affected areas. He said at least six to 15 people were daily diagnosed with the disease in the laboratory set up in the malaria centre.
When contacted, the officials concerned said they would soon launch a fumigation drive in Landikotal and arrange all the medicines for the patients at the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.
