"Imaginary Heroes" includes a strong narrative spine, with intriguing and big things happening throughout -- surprise virtue inside a family drama. But this virtue is obscured somewhat by the movie's insufficient narrative drive. As it stands, it is possible at different points to go into a waking trance while watching it, the way in which one does on long driving trips, only to snap back minutes later to locate that nothing has happened. Two teenagers is going to be talking about life. Minutes later, they will be talking about life. If there will be something less interesting than a set of teenagers smoking pot and ruminating about existence, it's difficult to assume what that could be.
What saves "Imaginary Heroes" is its essential truthfulness about families, which it reveals, not only in the broad movements of its story however in the small details. For instance, a parent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], played by Jeff Daniels, grieving and guilt-ridden over his son's suicide, takes to passing each evening in his car, hearing radio stations. That's specific and odd enough to achieve the ring of truth. There's even a touch of poetry in the picture of a guy who can't stand to be in their own house, walling himself removed from every contact and every physical reminder of his misery.
The performances are also of top quality, beginning with Emile Hirsch, who plays Tim, younger brother of a gifted swimming star. One fine day, young Tim, stunned, walks into the kitchen tracking something on his shoes. This is an economical way of communicating the catalytic event of "Imaginary Heroes": The older brother -- his father's pride and joy -- has blown his brains out.

First and foremost, he benefits from a healthy relationship together with his mother, who, though she's messed up somewhat herself, understands him and offers the type of unconditional love that his father is incapable of. If the brother was dad's favorite, Tim is mom's favorite, and the difference between mom and dad on that score might,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact, be the determining factor between one son's life and also the other's death. That mother-son bond, seemingly casual and glancing but really nourishing and deep, is convincingly rendered by Hirsch and Weaver.
