Deans accuses Italy coach of gamesmanship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans accused his Italian counterpart Nick Mallett of tiresome gamesmanship as the heat rose on the eve of their Rugby World Cup opener in Auckland.
Mallett, the shrewd former Springboks coach with a history of trying to lull opponents into a false sense of security, claimed the Wallabies were arguably Cup favourites following Australia's Tri Nations triumph and Queensland's Super Rugby breakthrough this year.
The South African also said Italy would be doing well if they got within 20 points of the second seeds and that the Azzurri were more focused on their potentially decisive pool game with Ireland.
Deans, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has heard it all before and was having none of it on Saturday.
"Nick's the master of pre-match mind games," he said.
"He said something similar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], probably even more provocative, when we were in Italy last year and the encounter was anything but that (one-sided)."
The Wallabies needed eight goals from Berrick Barnes in Florence last year to see off Mallett's men and have traditionally struggled to put the Azzurri to the sword,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We've got a lot of regard for them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for that reason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Deans said.
"We're not presuming anything and critically it's the start to the tournament and the nature of tournament play is that you do or you die,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"So that's what we're confronted with tomorrow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
The prospect of their dream draw turning very ugly very quickly has the entire Wallabies camp on guard against any pool slip-ups.
Should the second-ranked Australians win Pool C as favoured,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are not seeded to meet either of their fierce southern hemisphere rivals until the October 23 final.
But a loss to Italy or Ireland next Saturday at Eden Park would likely thrust the Wallabies into a knockout quarter-final against the Springboks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"These blokes strap on their boots to have fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to enjoy their time in the jersey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is brief," Deans said of his charges.
"But they're also aware of the circumstance. If things don't go well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're aware of the potential that the end can come quickly."
Winger Adam Ashley-Cooper said the Wallabies needed no reminding of how important it was to top the pool to ensure a smoother path in the knockout stages.
"You can't leave anything to chance," he said.
"You've got to win every game here. We hope to stay here for the length of the tournament. That's in everyone's sights, that's the goal.
"Our first focus is the Italians. It's important that we win this game because it's the start of the competition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the start of the tournament and we can really get underway from there and really build momentum."
Australia enter the tournament on the back of consecutive wins over South Africa and New Zealand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Deans said the Wallabies must raise the bar even higher.
