Croke Park 'encouraged' Mayo to split role of Secretary
GAA CHIEFS at Croke Park 'encouraged' the Mayo GAA Board to appoint a voluntary Secretary along with a full-time administrator because they made plans for Seán Feeney's departure in November,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Speaking to The Mayo News, Mayo GAA Chairman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Paddy McNicholas, confirmed that Croke Park were towards dividing the Secretary's work-load between two people.
He also admitted the voluntary position was 'open to anybody who's interested' and that 'somebody with connection with the GAA' would be preferable for that full-time administrative role.
"A quantity of counties are using this system and it appears to work nicely on their behalf," explained McNicholas.
"We are also in touch with Croke Park relating to this issue plus they encouraged us to visit down this route,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We also discussed it twice at Executive level,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also it seemed to be raised in the last County Board meeting. There wasn't much said about it by delegates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to be honest.
"I suppose it's 'two for the price of one'," he added. "There will be a full-time administrator who'll work a fixed week out of the office at McHale Park, along with a voluntary County Secretary who definitely are responsible for all that needs to be completed in the evenings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and at weekends.
"There's lots of work to become done, it's very busy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it is getting busier each day. I could see us needing 2 or 3 people at work in Castlebar down the road."
With Seán Feeney retiring in the Secretary post on November 15, 3 weeks before the Mayo GAA Convention, an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) is going to be held to appoint his successor.
The County Board are also aiming to have a full-time administrator in position before Feeney's departure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The Secretary job is available to anybody who desires it," said Paddy McNicholas. "Anybody is eligible to do it now.
"In terms of the administrator role, we're prefer if the successful candidate had experience, or knowledge, of the GAA. They should be in a position to understands the 'ins and outs' of the several competitions as well as how things operate in Mayo GAA.
"I think we now have a significant good system there," he added,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "and the two new individuals will be working together and sharing the workload. It was something which Croke Park encouraged.
"Seán is going to leave big shoes to fill. The final 16 years were possibly the busiest within the history of Mayo GAA with All-Ireland finals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whatsoever grades, and, obviously, the redevelopment at McHale Park.
