Carlisle woman who owes her success to her mum
win an award in Cumbria is brilliant and it is fantastic recognition for all the hard work, enthusiasm and loving care myself, my mum and our team put into our business every day. no stranger to recognition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having appeared in the Who Who of Britain top young business leaders for the last two years, and at 24 became the youngest person ever to address a seminar at an international card industry fair in Birmingham.
The greetings cards business has been in the family for generations. Sonya great aunt, a nurse at Dovenby Hospital, noticed the difference in patients spirits when they received cards and when she retired decided to start selling cards with her sister, Sonya grandmother. Sonya mum also joined the business.
a card is a way of conveying an emotion, and that what my great aunt saw. And in those days it was about the only way for people to communicate. She saw how happy cards made people, how they lifted their spirits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says the 28-year-old, who grew up in Barepot, Workington.
I was a toddler my great aunt used to sit me on the market stall and I would play with all the stock and the money out of the tin. My mum would set up the stall in Workington, Maryport and Silloth through the week and as I got older I loved helping out. I remember wearing carrier bags over our shoes so our feet didn get wet! only child, Sonya credits her parents who also develop and rent out properties in west Cumbria for giving her a strong work ethic and it clear she always enjoyed great support from them. (In case you wondering, the unusual surname comes from Sonya Dutch grandfather, who was in the merchant navy and met her grandmother in Silloth).
Twice more during the interview she disappears briefly to check things with her mum, who is working in the shop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and her dad, Robert, who helps out in the cafe and, according to Sonya, the best coffee in the world.
mum is my role model. She taught me to believe in myself, that there was nothing you can do. She got me to try all kinds of things, like trampolining lessons, when I was little and told me I could do it. So I never been frightened to try anything new. believes that to get ahead in business you have to be but fair a quality she always saw her mum demonstrate.
know what we want and how we are going to get there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. You can be too nice or people would walk all over you.
you got to have good morals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that something my mum has always shown. She been amazing, a real inspiration. 20 years ago Sonya mum moved the card business through to Carlisle, opening a shop on Bank Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], next door to the current premises. Sonya then moved from Stainburn School to Austin Friar and worked in the shop on Saturdays.
didn know at that point exactly what I wanted to do but I knew I was good at business; it came naturally to me and I wanted to work in the industry, possibly for one of the bigger players like Hallmark,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but whether in marketing or the business side I didn know. the premises next door to the card shop was put up for sale; a stunning 19th century building with many of its original features still intact, the site of the first Scottish bank in England.
Sonya mum originally wanted to look at it from a property developer point of view, but as soon as they walked through the door, they knew they found somewhere special for their business.
we knew like that, Sonya smiles, clicking her fingers. knew we could make something fantastic out of it. We were like two little kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we were giddy with excitement.
we came to buy it businesses like Boots and Laura Ashley were interested but because it a listed building there were restrictions on developing it. But we didn work against the council, we worked with them. They knew we weren here to rip the heart of the building out. family worked for months to restore its original features including marble pillars, ornate plaster work and oak panelling and added their own touches; the panelling of the cafe bar is made from wood from the old manager office, for example.
In 2004 the bigger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], glitzier Celebrations opened, and business has been booming ever since. Even the grim state of the economy hasn had an adverse effect.
just makes you work harder. There no point in thinking too much about it and letting things pass you by, you got to get out and about and do more. So we have promotions and event days so people know we are here.
think our success is a combination of things. There the shopping experience: as soon as people walk through the door there are the chandeliers and music, there this vibe as soon as they come in.
there are the staff and the products, we change our product range all the time. Handbags and jewellery are our best sellers. And people don realise we are competitive in price. Some people think we are a flashy store but we have fair pricing. That partly because we are on such good terms with our suppliers, and we can pass our discounts on. still enjoys going back to Workington to see old friends. Her favourite haunt for relaxing is Gilded Lily, and she enjoys spa days at places like Armathwaite Hall. Her big passion, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is horse riding. She regularly goes to stables near Longtown and wants to buy her own horse.
actually really nice because there such diversity, one day it award ceremonies, where I can get all glammed up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but then I just as happy wearing my wellies down at the stables.
the same in business; I happy on the shop floor mucking in but am also fine holding my own in serious business meetings. partner David,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 34,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], works for Carlisle Refrigeration. They got together just before Sonya 18th birthday.
She gets a bit flushed when I suggest a relationship lasting this long from such a young age is really quite romantic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she adds: moved from Workington and gave up quite a lot, and he puts up with me as well. I do take work home with me. Fitting in work and play. well, you do have to juggle, it like doing a jigsaw.
I love that fast pace. I love always doing things. I wouldn want to sit and mull things over, I need something to happen all the time. It keeps you going, all that adrenaline.
