Canes set sights on Parise to join Staal
RALEIGH -- The offseason was less than two days old and already, the question that wasn answered last summer was the first question of this summer: Will the Carolina Hurricanes finally get someone to play with Eric Staal?
Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said all the right things Monday: there will be money to pursue a high-profile free agent or trade target to play on Staal wing. The whispering campaign has been under way for a while that the Hurricanes are gathering together the funds to target New Jersey Devils free agent Zach Parise, but so will just about every other team in the league.
Rutherford said increased corporate and ticket revenue, along with the renegotiated television deal with FS Carolinas that begins in the fall of 2013, will give the Hurricanes money to spend. The millions collected from Peter Karmanos new minority owners have to figure, as well. Either way, it would be the first time since the Hurricanes successfully pursued Ron Francis in 1998 the franchise goes shopping in that particular neighborhood.
on my conversation with Mr. Karmanos, we talked about a top-line player, Rutherford said. agrees that that something we want to do. Not what we done in the past with free agents, where we go to the second-tier free-agent group, or the third tier or the fourth tier, but a top-line player. If it available by free agency or trade, we going to do everything we can to make that happen this year. Hurricanes loved Parise in 2003, when they took Staal with the second overall pick, but weren able to work a deal to get back into the first round to take Parise. They want a second chance.
Even if the Hurricanes miss out on Parise, that doesn mean all is lost. In 2005, they made a push for Paul Kariya,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who chose to sign with the Nashville Predators,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and ended up signing Ray Whitney instead one of those rare occasions where the consolation prize was more valuable than the grand prize.
Staal finished the year playing with Jiri Tlusty and Chad LaRose, both of whom had career-highs in goals, albeit only 17 and 19 respectively. Staal flourished under Muller,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but only after cringing when Erik Cole wasn replaced during another frustrating offseason.
me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yeah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it can be (frustrating), Staal said. I have the utmost respect for Jim and for Pete and the business that they run. I a player for them and I will compete and work and do everything I can to try and help us win games. The last couple (summers) have been difficult because of losing and guys that were very good players and who went on to be very good players on other teams.
I still think we got some good pieces here and young players who will hopefully get better next year. If we can add, like they been saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we see what happens. said he willing to help with any recruiting effort. Muller will no doubt be the centerpiece,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Stanley Cup champion as a player who shows every sign of having the tools to win one as a coach.
The Hurricanes can always make a convincing pitch to free agents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but have never had the money to back it up. This summer, they say they have the cash to make a splash.
As frustrated as he was at giving up four goals, even if he could hardly be expected to stop some of the chances his teammates gifted Monday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cam Ward could at least take some solace in the improvement he could feel as the game wore on.
DeCock: Pack shines best under the spotlight
All the ingredients were there, more than usual, even. Long before the game started,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fans were at the arena early in the morning for ESPN's "College GameDay." In the ensuing hours,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the excitement only continued to build.
DeCock: Canes improvement enough . for now
Well, all that left is the Stanley Cup now. The way some Carolina Hurricanes fans were abandoning ship after the two season-opening losses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Thursday win may provoke the same kind of overreaction.
DeCock: In mediocre ACC, home court is advantage
The party was over in Coral Gables by the time North Carolina wrapped up a comfortable win over Georgia Tech Wednesday night. At the Smith Center, the pleasure in seeing the Tar Heels win was almost secondary to Duke getting blown out in Miami. Both games proved it's advantageous for ACC teams to play at home this year.
DeCock: Canes' long wait delivers little excitement
It was a long time coming, this return of NHL hockey to the Triangle. The anticipation had been building for months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin joined the Carolina Hurricanes over the summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dampened but not destroyed by the delay occasioned by the lockout. After all that, it wasn't exactly worth the wait.
DeCock: There's no panic in the Canes, yet
The changes the Hurricanes made Monday have the appearance of panic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but were dictated less by Saturday result than the circumstances of this strange season.
DeCock: Worst possible start to season for Canes
If there was one image that summed up everything the Carolina Hurricanes didn want to see 20 minutes into the season, it was Cam Ward sitting on the bench in a baseball cap with a great view of an increasingly overworked scoreboard. Goals. Penalties. None of it good for the Hurricanes.
DeCock: To Hurricanes, it doesn matter who Semin is, only what he is
New Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin is often portrayed as being enigmatic or mysterious, but the Hurricanes don care who he is as long as he scores goals and he has a history of doing just that.
DeCock: Canes coach Kirk Muller brings fun back to team
Between Kirk Muller ebullient personality and the results the team saw on the ice, a long-forgotten emotion returned to the Hurricanes dressing room: Fun.
DeCock: Cane Ryan Murphy gets a look
This is what the Carolina Hurricanes have in the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft: A 19-year-old defenseman with the kind of skill, speed and guile you can only find in the first round, but with raw fundamentals at the position and a teen body 176 pounds on a 5-foot-11-inch frame that may not yet be ready for the physical pounding an NHL defenseman takes.
