Brighton Rock The Argus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Brighton's gloomy interwar years of gaudy seaside charm and seedy backstreet crime provided Graham Greene with the inspiration for his classic novel about the race gangs of the 1930s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It was famously adapted into the seminal British film noir that gave Richard Attenborough his big break in 1947,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Moving the action to the 1960s (and most of the filming locations to Eastbourne) director Rowan Joffe brings his overblown and misguided adaptation of the city's literary classic to the big screen,
misfiring on all cylinders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Opening with a balletic knife fight under the murky arches of the promenade, a gang of razor-wielding thugs stage a showdown that looks something like a darkly fetishized scene from West Side
Story.
Seeking revenge for the death of his boss, the sadistic, boyish "Pinkie" (Sam Riley) chases the main culprit along the seafront, eventually scaring him into the crowds on the Palace Pier.
Dodging among the tourists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the two hoodlums inadvertently have their photo snapped with Rose (Andrea Riseborough),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a local waitress out on her lunch break.
Breaking away from the day-trippers and finally catching up with his victim underneath the pier, Pinkie goes into hiding from both the police and Brighton's new kingpin 'Mr Colleoni' (Andy Serkis).
Meanwhile, Rose heads back to work with the ticket stub for the photograph that could expose Pinkie as a murderer - forcing the twitchy young psychopath to try and befriend her long enough to steal
it back.
Taking bits and pieces from both the book and the original film, the ambitious new Brighton Rock is a conceptual mess.
Dressed in nondescript suits and living in a dank,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], foggy Brighton that never reveals its background,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the characters of Joffe's adaptation seem lost somewhere between his various influences.
Other than an excuse to crowbar in the clichéd iconography of the period (including the obligatory Mods and Rockers clash) there seems to be no apparent reason for moving the story away from its
original setting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; and local residents will no doubt spend the film shaking their heads as the few brief shots of Brighton are intercut with the very different-looking seafront and pier of
Eastbourne.
Stepping into Attenborough's shoes, rising star Sam Riley does a great job inhabiting the complex Pinkie who represents the best of Greene's darkly conflicted and self-deluded characters.
Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everyone else in the film looks like they've been snipped from the pages of a bad comic strip, with surprisingly unconvincing turns from a ludicrously exaggerated Andy Serkis and
Helen Mirren's half-drawn brassy busybody - neither of whom look like they're acting in the same film.
The novel might recede even further into the background with this latest outing but Joffe's unbalanced, if suitably stylish, direction leaves just enough intact to make Brighton Rock a curiously
watchable British crime thriller.
You won't feel short-changed if you're not already familiar with the book or the original adaptation, but with less power and depth than a film 60 years its predecessor this is unlikely to win any
