'Bottle trees' shoot up within the desert
I know there is the expression: One man's trash is another man's treasure. I am not too sure about it, myself, but it certainly summarizes the work of Elmer Long out in the desert near Oro Grande.

"I used to set off with my father in the '50s, and he would collect bottles," he explained. "I used to like to shoot, but he'd head for that dumps."
Today, Long may be the person receiving his father's bottle collection, as well as found thousands of more himself. But it doesn't end there. For he's turning the former glass repositories into huge "trees" that stand sentinel in the yard and reflect the light.
Each tree stands a lot more than 10 feet tall, and Long has welded branches to the steel trunks. On each of these branches he puts a bottle after which hoists the entire obelisk right into a foundation. Along with each tree, he puts items he's found in the desert - one comes with an old still and on top of another he has a bed frame.

Long's project is not just the bottle trees, because he changes direction from time to time. The noise of wind chimes floats on the warming desert air. Not the small fancy things you usually associate with that art, but hammers on hubcaps or bones on steel. All very varied and interesting.
Long gets lots of visitors and that he welcomes them all. When inquired about maybe charging, he rails at the thought.
"I'd get all kinds of problems then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "No, people may come and go as they wish. While they're here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're my guests. As long as they close the gate after they leave."
