THE DISTRAUGHT parents of Aspatria teenager Andrew Buchanan, who was found dead in Whitehaven Marina last November, will never know how or why their son died.
West Cumbria coroner John Taylor said there were so many unanswered questions arising from yesterday's inquest that he had no alternative but to record an open verdict. Andrew's parents James and Fiona, of Hayton Castle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Aspatria,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], left the court in tears,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], still baffled at the mystery surrounding the last few hours of his life. They said it didn't matter about the verdict and paid tribute to their wonderful son, described as "a people person who lived life to the full".
An extensive search was launched when he failed to return home the next day. His body was discovered on November 3, about four metres down in the water underneath a boat in the marina. His shoes were found placed together on top of another boat. The inquest heard that Andrew and his school friends had been at a party at the rugby league club before making their way, via some bars, to the Park nightclub on the harbourside.
Close friend Gareth Preshaw said Andrew seemed fine, "just happy, just normal" in the club - and although they had had quite a lot to drink,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he thought he was tipsy rather than "legless".
Andrew was meant to be staying at his house in Workington that night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when Gareth couldn't find him, he assumed he had left early. Doorman Russell Law saw Andrew at about 1am on the balcony area of the club. The teenager was alone and had cuts to his chin and face which were bleeding. Mr Law said he couldn't answer him when he asked what had happened and said he seemed "off his head."
There was some suggestion that he had been going to jump off the balcony and someone had to pull him away,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Andrew was taken to head doorman Andrew Jones for first aid to his cuts. He thought Andrew was drunk and possibly on drugs though he couldn't be certain. He said people were always coming out of the club saying their drinks had been spiked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Andrew was not known to take drugs.
The bouncers were concerned and asked police outside to get an ambulance. As they did so Andrew walked off down the street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He was found drowned in the nearby marina the following day.
Mr Taylor said they would never know what had happened in the club - how Andrew sustained the injuries to his face or if drugs were involved, and if so had he taken them voluntarily or if a drink had been spiked.
Andrew had surprised door staff by walking out of the club, but how he got to the marina and through the security gates to the pontoon was a mystery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as was the reason why his shoes were left neatly on top of the boat, as if he had taken them off to dive into the water.
