300 Newtown kids cheer on Fairfield Stags,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
BRIDGEPORT -- Sunday was Newtown Day for the Fairfield Stags men's basketball team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which invited all of Newtown's children to watch its game against from floor seats.
More than 300 grade-school kids and their parents took the Stags up on their invitation, filling the with joy.
For most, it was a welcome break for students who have had to endure the unthinkable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], followed by scores of street-corner reminders of the Dec. 14 shooting at .
Before and after the basketball game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and at halftime, the kids lined up to give players high-fives.
"Get your hands out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], here they come!" said graduate assistant ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who choreographed the high-five gauntlet and the many games of skill that took place on the court during timeouts.
"It was really cool," said , 9, a student at . "I liked the beginning when the players came out, and halftime, too."
All of the kids were presented with a gift bag from Orange-based and other goodies.
"I actually forgot about this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but then when I woke up this morning I remembered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then I was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like, `Yes!' " said ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 11, a student at .
The game featured eight lead changes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Niagara beat Fairfield 67-64.
"We are all true Americans. We got the spirit and our hearts are aching for them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], " Niagara coach said. "We were proud to be a part of it. We are proud Fairfield asked us to be a part of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to let the people in Newtown know we care about them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too."
For many, it was their first experience with the sights and sounds of a Division I college basketball game -- the squeak of sneakers on the hardwood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the coaches with their bulging jugulars and the forever-smiling cheerleaders.
