3 Plumlees on Duke's front line,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Nowhere Devils have three Plumlee brothers on the team: Senior Miles and younger brothers Mason, a junior,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Marshall, a freshman. That's just the third time that's happened in a Division I school and the very first time since the 1950s.
''It's recently been unbelievable,'' Miles Plumlee said. ''It's been the very best year for me so far already, just having the ability to spend more time with them and every one of us being together. I could not have imagined this would ever happen becoming an adult, but it has,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you simply wish to take advantage of it.''
The other set of brothers were Matthew, Thomas and William Brennan, who played at Villanova in 1957-58; and Bucky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harold and Terry Bockhorn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who played at Dayton that season.
The 3 Plumlee brothers are 6-foot-10 or taller and at least 225 pounds. That contributes up to 20 feet, 7 inches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and 705 pounds of Plumlees banging the boards for the sixth-ranked Blue Devils.
Duke opens Friday night against Belmont like a top contender for a 12th Final Four and fifth national championship under coach Mike Krzyzewski.
''It's awesome for all of us. We couldn't become more happy that everybody's here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' Mason said. ''At the same time, every time they visit for good practices, and it'll make it simpler on our parents. . They only have to travel to Durham along with a couple away games.''
The brothers' first college game together will mark the latest part of a basketball journey that began when Miles would be a second-grader.
That's when they moved across Indiana from West Lafayette to Warsaw, to an alternative house by having an adjustable hoop within the driveway. That's how their 6-7 father Millard - an old player at Tennessee Tech nicknamed ''Perky'' - and mother Leslie - an old 6-1 Purdue player - introduced them to the sport.
In those days, Miles and Mason would team up and play two-on-two against Marshall and their father - when the two older brothers weren't facing off against each other with Dad refereeing.
Perky Plumlee jokingly called it ''cheap entertainment.'' Miles admitted things would get heated in those one-on-one battles, quipping that ''it wasn't always like, literally, a fight, but we never finished a lot of the games.''
''Growing up, there was always a bit of a physical difference - Miles and Mason were always pretty competitive together, however i was always smaller and a little weaker along with a few years behind,'' Marshall said. ''So there were a lot of one-on-one-games together, and I'd enter after i could, however i did not have a chance. Making this a brand new experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], getting here to Duke and I'm finally dealing with the stage where I can be competitive athletically, and it is a new feeling. When Trent Johnson left the Cardinal for LSU,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Miles requested and received a release from his letter-of-intent. Krzyzewski told the household he was interested - but only when which was Comfortable with Mason.
''Mason didn't hesitate,'' Perky Plumlee said. ''He said, `That'd be great. I'd like it if you would recruit Miles.'''
Everything lined up for that brothers to have one season together after Marshall, a four-star prospect, signed with Duke last fall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Mason - who appeared in a number of online mock NBA drafts early in the year - opted to return to school for his junior year, saying the allure of having fun with his brothers was one of the factors in his decision.
''Even in the next stage, that would never happen - if we're lucky enough to make it happen,'' Mason said. ''I wouldn't say it was the biggest factor, however it did element in.''
The brothers seem to be having a blast together to date. At Duke's version of midnight madness, they turned the dunk contest into quite the household affair.
Miles got a bit of help on his first attempt from Mason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who flipped the ball from the side from the backboard before Miles swooped in to jam it home. That set up a brother-vs.-brother showdown between Marshall and Miles in the final - and Marshall finished up being an accomplice on his big brother's winning slam.
Marshall stood in the lane together with his eyes covered while Miles hurdled him for any one-handed jam that drew straight 10s from the judges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
''We haven't really discussed it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I will surely say we've all enjoyed being together to date,'' Marshall said. ''It's definitely something we aren't likely to ignore. We're all pushing one another to try and make each other better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and most anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spending time together is a lot of fun.
